Ken Davidoff of Newsday has reported that the Mets and FA starter Jon Smoltz are getting closer to a possible match. While no offers have been made, the Mets would like to use Smoltz in a mentor role for their younger starters. Smoltz does not particularly excite me. However, at this point, no free agent starters besides Jarrod Washburn really offer anything at all. Smoltz at best could offer some experience and mentor Jon Niese and our younger starters. Other than that, Smoltz basically is someone you cross your fingers and hope with.
